Messiah Ovation

A richly moving performance of the Messiah on December 5th saw the audience in a packed Sheffield Cathedral leap to their feet for a standing ovation. Soloists Philippa Hyde, Alison Hudson, Stephen Liley, and Alex Ashworth were splendid, and the soloists of the National Festival Orchestra were on top form, not least the trumpeter.

Audience response:  ‘that was the best performance of the Messiah I have ever heard‘.

For those who missed it – come along and create your own Messiah at Dore Parish Church on December 19th.

And for those who enjoyed it – if you think that was good, wait til you hear the Bach B Minor Mass in March…

Mendelssohn sings and Lindley talks!

Super concert on November 19th, with the excellent National Festival Orchestra, playing the orchestral symphony in the Hymn of Praise. What a treat! Hope we entertained the dedicated Occupiers outside (at least those who came in to the concert really enjoyed it!).

Next up: Simon Lindley will be on Radio Sheffield on December 2nd in the afternoon, about twenty to three. Do tune in!

Wakefield Music Collection in danger! Please write or sing to your council and MP!

At a meeting of the full Yorkshire Libraries and Information (YLI) Council held on Friday 30th September, an in principle decision was taken to close the Yorkshire Libraries and Information Music and Drama collection and service as it currently exists. The service is currently based at Balne Lane Library in Wakefield.

The music collection at Wakefield is one of the most important in the country, and comprises over 500,000 items of music and 90,000 copies of plays, thus making it one of the largest collections of performing sets in the UK. It is available not only to individual users, schools and music and drama groups in the Yorkshire and Humber area but also to organisations and groups outside of the region on a pay per use basis, so this is a decision that could affect amateur performing groups throughout the UK.

The 12 local authorities that subscribe to the service have decided ‘in principle’ to close the service at the end of March 2012, and are considering this decision and its implications at their next meeting on 3 November.

  6. TWEET your protest and pass on the word, using the hashtag #saveyorkshiremusiclibrary (this will ensure all posts are collected together as a massed body of material)

Welcome to the Sheffield Bach Choir

Sheffield Bach Choir is one of the longest-established choirs in the city – celebrating its 60th anniversary in some style during 2010. We are a mixed choir founded originally to revive public interest in the music of Bach. Each year we present at least one major Bach choral work, we perform Handel’s Messiah in December and, in addition, present a minimum of two further concerts of mixed classical repertoire. Our concerts take place at Sheffield Cathedral, and at St Mark’s in Broomhill, and we run a “come-sing” Messiah around Christmas time at another venue.
