BACH – St JOHN PASSION
Saturday 23 March 2024 at 7.30pm
St Mark’s Broomhill
The choir is pleased to present Bach’s St John Passion in the wonderful surroundings of St Mark’s Church Broomhill. Written during his first year as director of church music in Leipzig and first performed in 1724, this is the older of Bach’s two Passions, narrating Christ’s Passion as told in the Gospel of St John. The story is told by soloists and chorus, punctuated by hymn tunes that would have been familiar to congregations of the time. This magnificent work is at once a sober and fitting preparation for Easter and also a superb example of Bach’s glorious composition for orchestra and voices.

BRAHMS – GERMAN REQUIEM
Saturday 29 June 2024 at 7.30pm
Victoria Hall Sheffield
Sheffield Bach Choir was pleased to accept an invitation to sing the Brahms German Requiem with Sheffield Oratorio Chorus, in a first for the two choirs. Brahms began to write his A German Requiem following the sudden death of his beloved mother in early 1865; though he rushed home he was too late to see her. The work was immediately recognised as a remarkable composition, and though challenging to present, has proved enduring and popular with performers and audiences alike.
Celebrated soprano Elizabeth Watts and baritone Guy Robinson will join the choirs and orchestra for this very special end to our 74th season
